Introduction
Stretch Film is a highly elastic plastic film that is wrapped around an object. Elastic recovery keeps items tightly bound. In contrast, Stretch Film wraps loosely around an item and shrinks tightly with heat. Although it looks similar to plastic food wrap, it is not usually made of materials considered safe for contact with food.
Commonly used to hold pallet loads together, but can also be used to bundle smaller items. Stretch Film types include bundle Stretch Film, hand Stretch Film, extended core Stretch Film, machine Stretch Film, static dissipative film, etc.
Material
The most common Stretch Film material is Linear Low Density Polyethylene (LLDPE) made by copolymerizing ethylene and alpha olefins, most commonly butene, hexene and octane.
The use of higher alpha olefins (hexene or octene) improves the properties of Stretch Films, especially regarding elongation at break and puncture resistance. Other types of polyethylene and PVC are also available. Once stretched, it uses elastic recovery to keep the load taut.
How to manufacture Stretch Films?
Blown away: The resin is melted, extruded through an annular die and air cooled. This is a slower process, but provides a higher quality bond. Blown film is not a consistent extrusion process, resulting in inconsistencies across the film web.
Cast: The film is extruded through a slot die and passed through a chill roll. This will speed up the cooling process. Stretch Films are more consistent and have better performance characteristics.
Other properties such as breaking strength, adhesion, clarity, tear resistance and electrostatic discharge.
Exclusive Properties
- Increased stability of products or packages forming a unit load.
- More efficient handling and storage of general cargo.
- some protection against dust and moisture.
- Some degree of tamper resistance and resilience to package theft.
- Sunscreen (UV stretch wrap).
Ensuring that boxes stay on the pallet and are oriented correctly is an important aspect of warehouse shipping, especially as the demand for increased throughput continues to grow.
